How does Gravity Affect Flowing Water? (version 2)

  • July 30

Why does the width of water in the fountain, or even from a kitchen faucet, get narrower as it falls. Watch this video to see this phenomenon and to consider this question. For a more detailed look at this same phenomenon at the same fountain, watch this video too.... CONTINUE READING

Physics of Dance Workshop – Part 1

  • September 9

Have you ever considered the math and science involved in something as artistic as dance? In this video we take a metaphorical walk through the amazing dance moves demonstrated to us by members of the Dallas Black Dance Theater. Physics especially contributes to dance, and you can learn more about the following properties in this video: Gravity, Center of Gravity, Normal & Gravitational Forces, Angles, Symmetry, Horizontal and Vertical Movement, Momentum... How do the Hammering Men move?

  • September 9

How did the artist create movement in this sculpture? Join Dr. Glen Whitney, Founder of the National Museum of Mathematics, as you discover the power of 4 bar linkages, and how they enable the arms of the Hammering Men to move. This video was supported by NorthPark Center. Supplementary Activity Guides for this video to extend student learning for K-12 grade levels are freely available here: https://talkstem.... What is Bernoulli’s Principle?

  • September 9

The sculpture Luminaria highlights multiple scientific principles involved in the function of aircraft with the shapes cut into the steel cylinders it’s made up of. One of these is, represented by swirling lines, is Bernoulli’s principle, used to characterize how forcing air to travel at different speeds can generate a lifting force. The way this principle is taken advantage of through mechanical engineering to help airplane wings fly is discussed. This video was supported by the City of Dal... CONTINUE READING
